For over 200 years the original temple was the home of the Emerald Buddha. The current building was rebuilt by the French between 1936 and 1942 during the colonial period of French Indochina.

Wat Si Saket

Wat Si Saket
Possibly the oldest temple in Vientiane as it wasn't sacked in 1827 by the armies of Siam who used the compound as their headquarters and lodging place. It was built in the Siamese style of Buddhist architecture, with a surrounding terrace and an ornate five-tiered roof, rather than in the Lao style.
